EGR Awards
eGaming Review magazine has announced the shortlist for their prestigious “Casino Operator of the Year” award, which features contenders such as William Hill, 32Red and 888.com. The award ceremony is set to take place on the 30th of November in London and, according to the EGR Awards website, will feature some of “the top performers in the industry”.
32Red are notably pleased by the nomination, with company CEO Ed Ware suggesting that their “nomination demonstrates the importance of these qualities to the gaming industry still, and are elements we plan to build on indefinitely.” Well, while we’re also pleased for all of the casinos that made it onto the shortlist, we can’t help but think it’s rather strange that in an industry which is meant to hold the customer as number one priority, players aren’t really allowed to have their say at the event.
Even though players can submit their favourite casinos for consideration, the shortlist and subsequent winners are decided completely by judges. Last year, a group of “industry professionals” judged that 888 should receive the Casino Operator of the Year award for a second year running and we believe this year’s judges won’t rock the boat either. Instead, they’ll no doubt opt for declaring 888.com as operator of the year, as, let’s face it, no one wants to annoy the industry leader, least of all those who make a living out of working with online titans such as Gigi Levy’s company.
However, we can’t help but feel that if the shortlist and winner choices were in the hands of players, the whole process would be a little more democratic and, chances are, there would be a lot more variety when it came to the casinos listed. If you think the eGaming Review Awards should be decided by players, not industry bigwigs, then make sure to leave us a comment. Alternatively, if you disagree, we’d love to hear from you too.
