Three Virgin Media employees have been judged to have abused their positions to use privileged information to place £16,000 of bets on X Factor results.

The workers used their access to the voting patterns of the public to predict the most likely winner and then place large bets on those people to go through. They placed £16,000 in bets every week on Betfair who believe that around 100 other gamblers may have been affected.

The director of regulation for the Gambling Commission Nick Tofiluk said: “The bets were unfair as individuals involved had inside information.”

The Gambling Commission has therefore ruled that the workers involved misused access to data on which acts had the most public support each week. This resulted in a voiding order and was the first time that the Commission has ever issued such an order.

The workers were sacked and could be sued by the Betfair gamblers that they bet against.
