Students at the National University of Singapore have developed an innovative way of informing the public about the environment, through the use of casino games. The students have modified existing games such as slots, to reflect the concerns of environmentalists and green campaigners, highlighting how important it is for countries to work together to tackle climate change.
In the students roulette game, players have to spin as many positive green messages as possible to win. Those who land on anti-green ideas, such as “apathetic companies”, will have points deducted. The university has also adapted the classic game of slots to reflect ideas surrounding climate change: Green gamblers have to uncover four representative nations when they spin. If they fail to do so, it highlights the problems of reaching a fair climate change agreement.
Speaking about the casino, project director Tan Wei Rui suggested that the exhibition aims to show “that you are actually gambling with your future now by leading your various lifestyles and should do our best to change”. The casino is part of a month long “carnival” aiming to educate about the environment and climate change.
