Macau Casinos

While Las Vegas is traditionally held as the number one gaming destination in the world, it may surprise you to learn that Macau has quickly emerged as a contender (and some would argue, victor) over Vegas. In 2006, Macau matched Las Vegas’ gambling revenue of $6 billion and soon became the highest volume gambling capital.

The gaming industry in Macau used to be monopolised by Stanley Ho and his Sociedade de Turismo e Diversões de Macau, but in 2002, several large Vegas brands successfully tapped into the market. While Stanley, and his daughter Pansy, are still involved in Macau’s gaming industry, it’s not as Ho-heavy as it once was.

However, while Vegas is surrounded in myth and has cultivated an impressive tourist tradition, Macau is still a relatively new venture for both gaming industry bigwigs and gambling enthusiasts alike. If you consider visiting a casino-related area, your first thought will undoubtedly be Las Vegas, your second Atlantic City and then, just maybe, your third will be Macau. In today’s blog, we’re going to cover the top casinos in Macau, in order to help those who haven’t heard of the region understand why Macau is so popular and in turn, why it’s definitely worth a visit.

MGM Grand Macau

In today’s news item about MGM we mentioned how the company was keen to hold onto its MGM Grand in Macau, which it owns 50% of – Pansy Ho owning the rest. Well, this 35 story casino resort is one of the feathers in their hat and perhaps one of the company’s strongest investments. It’s also a hit with visitors to Macau, as the mix of restaurants, as well as a spa and, of course, casino games offers a complete gaming experience.

Wynn Macau

Classed as a “luxury resort”, Wynn Macau was one of the very first Vegas style casinos in the region and is still a player favourite. The casino is huge and the management has gone all out on extras, such as the Tree of Prosperity show, which Wikipedia informs us is “designed to thrill and excite guests as they enter Wynn Macau.” Alternatively, if that doesn’t grab you, there’s over 500 casino games available, including table games and slots.

Sands Macao

Unlike our other featured Macau casinos, Sands Macao is mainly for day visitors. The casino does offer a 51 VIP suite hotel, but it’s usually frequented by day trippers who head to the casino from other parts of China. While we don’t recommend you stop at Sands Macao (there isn’t enough room!) it’s definitely worth a visit. Plus, the casino offers over 700 table games!

The Venetian

Finally, an honorary mention goes to The Venetian, which is the largest casino in the world (at the moment). If you wish to find out more about the Venetian, make sure to read our article on the largest casino in the world.
