Singing Nuns
A nun from New York has been charged with sending false invoices to her school in order to pay off credit card bills and expenses created during gambling trips to Atlantic City casinos.
Sister Marie Thornton was a vice president at Iona College and is believed to have been claiming money for ten years between 1999 and 2009. During this time, she was in charge of school finances and has been accused of providing herself with more than $850,000 (£538,579).
Thornton resigned in 2009 and has claimed that she is not guilty of the federal embezzlement charge that has been brought to her. The college has issues a statement saying that the school has taken action and has managed to recover most of the missing funds.
It has also been confirmed that that Thornton has been accused of stealing is around $850,000, rather than the $1.2 million that was originally reported.
