Online gambling and online casinos in particularly are big business. The fact that they remain popular when other industries have faltered is a testament to their excitement values and more importantly, their ability to make players seriously rich.

With the US moving ever closer to online gambling legislation, many companies are licking their lips at the prospect of a potentially huge market being opened up.

As a result, many companies are making great strides towards getting involved in the US online gambling scene. Paddy Power are currently waiting on a Nevada license while PartyCasino operators are already over there as are William Hill.

Now Indian tribes in the US have announced their intention to play a significant role in any potential future online gambling in the States and who could blame them. Traditionally the operators of land based casinos in the country, Indian tribes are hoping to have some success in the online gambling industry.

Chairman of the Mohegan Tribe, Bruce Bozsum, told reporters that igaming was of critical importance to his people.

He added: "Indian tribes can compete and be as successful as anyone else."

He may have a point as many land based casino companies have been able to successfully operate online versions. Genting Casino is operated by Genting who run a large number of casinos across the world while retail bookmakers have also found their feet online with Ladbrokes Casino and William Hill Casino proving popular.

But Indian tribes won't be the only ones hoping to open up US online gambling so they are sure to face some stiff competition. Only time will tell whether these casino operators will succeed online.
