Ireland's Super Casino Plans on Hold

Las Vegas

It was going to be a huge tourism draw for Ireland and it was also going to offer a huge amount of casino gambling options. Unfortunately, the dream of an Irish Las Vegas-style super casino appears to be unrealistic for the time being following changes to gambling laws in the country.

There had previously been plans for a €460 million casino to be built in Tipperary but new laws would prevent these plans from coming to fruition. The casino itself would have been in a large resort and would have measured 6,000 square metres. The resort would also have included a replica of the White House, a heliport, golf course, racecourses and a large hotel.

Rather than allowing the super casino, the law will now favour medium sized casinos in various sites around the country. As a result, the group behind the plans for the Tipperary site are thought to be considering removing the casino from their resort completely or simply applying for a medium casino license.

The changes to the law were made by the government as they felt that super casinos such as the Tipperary site would not be able to attract enough customers in order to be successful and that there would be a threat to vulnerable people.

So for the time being it appears as if Ireland's dreams of having their own taste of Las Vegas are far from coming true.
