It has been well documented that Las Vegas is now just a shade of its former self. The town nicknamed 'America's Playground' not only faces stiff competition from a number of other US cities but has also been eclipsed by the Asian destinations of Macau and Singapore.

Cash-strapped areas such as Miami and Boston are turning to gambling and more specifically casinos to generate some much needed revenue meaning that Vegas is facing ever more troubles.

Contracts for many thousands of casino staff are due to expire this year and if things don't improve then there's a high chance of many people being out of a job.

As well as flourishing gambling towns, there is a considerable threat to Nevada's gambling economy which comes in the form of the internet.

Online gambling may soon be legalised in Nevada as well as across a number of other US states. While online poker will be the first port of call for operators, online casinos and eventually online sports betting are sure to follow at some stage.

The trick for the established land-based casinos such as Caesars Palace, MGM Grand, Bellagio and Luxor will be ensuring a way in which they can co-exist and even compliment their online counterparts.
