Newham Town Hall
Following a lengthy selection process, the decision was made by Newham council earlier this year to award a large casino license to Aspers. The success of the Aspers bid meant that the new casino will be built on top of the Westfield Stratford City shopping centre in Newham.
However, two of the losing bidders, Apollo Genting and City & Eastern felt that this decision was not making the most of the opportunity and subsequently launched judicial reviews. These reviews were questioning the decision of Newham council and were hoping to change the outcome.
However, both organisations withdrew the applications yesterday, before the preliminary hearing was due to take place in the High Court. Both Apollo Genting and City & Eastern announced that their applications were withdrawn reluctantly due to the amount of money and time that the reviews would take up.
The Apollo Genting casino would have been located at Silvertown Quays in Docklands while the City & Eastern project was also due to be situated in Docklands, this time at Gallions Reach.
A spokesman for City & Eastern confirmed that withdrawal of the legal challenge and added: "The decision was made reluctantly, as we still firmly believe that Newham has wasted an opportunity."
