Rubbish Bin
A lottery player in Spain came very close to losing the prize of €9 million (£7.5 million) after having thrown the tickets in the bin, just hours before discovering that they had won.
Fortunately, Ignacio Gonzalez was able to recover the tickets after searching his home and his neighbourhood rubbish bin. Gonzalez, from Basque Country in the north of Spain, had entered the lottery along with 14 friends and found that one of their tickets had struck lucky. However, soon after winning his excitement turned to panic as he could not find the winning ticket.
After the search of his home had been fruitless, Gonzalez began to rifle through his neighbourhood bin in front of stunned passers-by. Finally he found the tickets which were mixed in with the rubbish and was able to claim the €600,000 that each player in the syndicate had won.
Speaking about the event, Gonzalez said: “The New Year was off to a very good start, but on the other hand I couldn’t find the tickets.”
