Margaritaville Casino in Biloxi Postponed Indefinitely

Margaritaville Casino and Resort, Biloxi

Margaritaville Casino and Resort

As of late, the attention given to the casino industry in the United States has tended to focus on gaming capitals such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City. However, evidence the impact of the recession on the US casino market can be found in states across the country. A recent article by ABC news about the proposed Margaritaville Casino and Resort in Biloxi, Mississippi, indicates how, over the space of juist a few years, the casino industry has dramatically changed.

In 2007, a new joint venture between Harrah’s Entertainment and singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett was announced. A casino resort, which would be themed around Buffett and named “Margaritaville” after the star’s 1977 smash hit, would open by spring 2010 in Biloxi. Since then, the casino industry has been ravaged by a global recession and it seems that the years of constant growth and new developments are a distant memory. In late 2008, after taking the project private, Harrah’s announced that they would “sideline” Margaritaville. Since then, the company has had to reassess its financial situation and has now announced that while it is “committed” to the project”, they “do not have a date for when construction will resume”.

East Coast Casino Market is “Crowded”

Flag of the United States

Just a few days ago we blogged about whether casinos in Atlantic City would ever recover from the recession. In the blog post, we limited our discussion to this city in New Jersey, which was one of the first areas on the East Coast to attempt to compete with Las Vegas’ monopoly on resort style gaming in the United States. Well, according to executives at the East Coast Gaming Congress, it’s not just casinos in Atlantic City which are seeing profit losses and a decline in revenue due to increased competition and less consumer spending: Casino operators in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and other states, have told executives at the event that they’re now competing directly with one another to attract customers.

American Gaming Association president, Frank Fahrenkopf Jr., has suggested that casinos on the East Coast of the United States will face even more competition when twelve gambling venues, which currently only offer slots, begin offering table games in the next few months. When discussing the current state of the East Coast gambling market, John Finamore of Penn National Gaming proposed that while the industry isn’t “saturated” at the moment, it’s “clearly crowded”.

Things to do in Atlantic City

Lucy the Elephant

Lucy the Elephant

It may surprise you to learn that, just like Las Vegas, there’s an awful lot of none-casino related fun to be had in Atlantic City. Whether you want to be spooked or educated, entertained or just admire the views, Atlantic City is bursting with museums, architectural sights and entertainment venues which you might not have known about. If you’re planning on heading to the New Jersey city for a gaming holiday, we recommend you check out our list of things to do in Atlantic City to find out about the very best attractions.

Check out Lucy the Elephant

Atlantic City is probably one of the few places in the world that houses a six storey (yes, six storey!) elephant. Deemed by Wikipedia as an “architectural folly”, Lucy the Elephant was constructed to attract homeowners and businesses to the area. At 65 feet tall, Lucy is probably one of the tallest animal themed buildings in the world and such notoriety no doubt saved her from demolition in the 1970’s. It seems businesses and residents have come to accept the large grey elephant in the city and Lucy even featured in a 2006 insurance advert. Located near Atlantic Avenue, Margate City, Lucy is a must see. You can even check her out on Google Maps.

Lowest Casino Table Limits in Las Vegas

The Orleans Casino

The Orleans Casino

In June we reported how minimum table limits in some of Las Vegas’ best (and most expensive) casinos were dropping due to the current economic climate. Well, since first posting that news item we’ve received a lot of e-mails from players wishing to know where they can take advantage of low casino table limits. Specifically, players are interested in knowing where the best low limit roulette is in Las Vegas, as well as how casinos regain their edge on low limit blackjack games.

Well, we’re going to do our best to answer these questions and find out which casinos in particular are currently offering low table limits on their casino games. Before beginning though, a word of caution is necessary. Often, casinos will advertise low, mid-week table limits, but if you visit on a weekend, these limits will have increased. If you’re looking to take advantage of any of the following low minimum table limits, make sure to phone up the casino, or best yet, quickly pop in to check out their current table limits, as they often change without much prior warning. That aside, below you’ll find out the latest details which we could uncover about low limit gaming tables in Las Vegas.

How Long is the Atlantic City Boardwalk?

Atlantic City Boardwalk

Atlantic City Boardwalk

Today we’re going to delve into the Casino Online mailbag once again and answer a few questions we’ve been sent about Atlantic City. As regular blog readers will remember, we recently blogged about casinos in Atlantic City, noting that while it doesn’t gain as much coverage as Las Vegas, Atlantic City does offer a first-rate gaming destination.

Well, today we’ll be continuing our quest to put Atlantic City on the gambling map by answering questions we’re often sent, such as how long is the Atlantic City boardwalk? and what is the legal gambling age in Atlantic City? While these questions might not seem of the utmost priority to some, you’ll be surprised to learn that it’s these very questions which can make or break a trip to Atlantic City. If we haven’t included a particular question which you’d like answering, make sure to leave us a comment saying so, otherwise, read on for our Atlantic City advice:

Legal Gambling Ages in the US

US Gambling

US Gambling

In today’s blog post we’re going to tackle the American conundrum that is the different gambling ages in the United States. While in the UK, we tend to keep things simple (the legal gambling age in the UK is 18), in the US, state governments like to be difficult. However, we’ll help you clear things up, by posting the current legal gambling age for places such as Las Vegas and Ontario, in Canada.

Before delving into the legislative world (or should that be nightmare?) of gambling ages in the US, it would be useful to note that while on some states you can gamble at 18, you can’t actually wager in casinos. The UK comparison to this would be that while you can buy National Lottery tickets when you’re 16, you can’t head into a casino until your 18. However, because the UK tends to adhere to one set of rules, the legislation which differentiates the National Lottery from casinos appears a lot more logical than the 50 odd pieces of different legislation in the states.

Anyway, below you’ll find out more about the legal gambling ages in both the US and Canada, as well as how old you have to be before you can actually visit a casino.

California

The legal gambling age in California is 18, if you intend on buying lottery tickets and playing charity bingo games. However, if you wish to play in a casino, in some you have to be 18, whereas in others 21. We recommend checking before you enter.

Are Casino Bosses the new Bankers?

Calvin Ayre

Calvin Ayre

No matter whether you’re based in the United States or the UK, you’ll have heard a lot about bankers over the past few months. Whether it’s Freddie and Fannie buying toxic assets, or Northern Rock crumbling; we all know the stories about banker’s big fat pay cheques and bonuses, which they willing accepted while the banks were allegedly falling apart around them.

While the furore around bankers has ground to halt, the financial details of quite a few casino bosses have now surfaced. Don’t get us wrong, we know that the people who own casinos are no doubt rich…That’s one of the benefits of the job after all. Until recently though, we wouldn’t be able to see the homes of these casino bigwigs and find out what their collection of Persian rugs and antiques is really worth.

Back in March we reported that Calvin Ayre was cutting his ties in Canada by selling his luxury condo for $10 million. Ayre’s condo contains "6-and-a-half baths, private outdoor decks, a 360-degree view, a 25-foot-high living room ceiling, a 1,200-bottle wine cellar, a panic room, three parking spaces, and comes completely furnished." If you’re interested in Ayre’s condo (it still hasn’t sold), you can take a virtual tour here.

Are Golden Casino Cashing in on Michael Jackson's Death?

Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson

US casino, Golden Casino, have announced that they'll be offering a special slots tournament to commemorate the life and times of Michael Jackson. The tournament, which is set to run throughout August and end on the 29th (Jackson's birthday) will offer a $15,000 prize pool, with $5,100 of this going to the overall winner.

Golden Casino's tournament has been accepted without comment and apparently seen by players like Maggie Frenz (unfortunately, we can't find any details about this elusive Maggie) as "a fun time for anyone who loved Michael Jackson's music."

However, when we read the news of Golden Casino's commemorative tournament, we couldn't help but feel a tinge of distaste. The question we wish to pose in this blog post is: Is it appropriate to celebrate Michael Jackson's life and music in this manner?

Golden Casino isn't the only one who is seemingly, as we rather basely put it, "cashing in" on Michael's death. The BBC reported that at the recent New York memorials, street vendors were desperately printing up Jackson related merchandise. The BBC interviewed one Dean Powell, who suggested he would stay up all night printing extra merchandise if he had too, as the "stuff...is selling like hot cakes."

Similarly, the day after Jackson's death HMV, the UK music retailer, moved all of their Michael Jackson records so they were prominently displayed in-store. Unsurprisingly they soon sold out of all of their Jackson records.
