Gambling in 2012 - Part II

Gambling Law

Gambling in 2012 - Part Two

As is often the case with gambling and online gambling law, in 2012 a lot of talking was done but not that much action was taken.

Just so that you could try and stay on top of the situation, we gave you a quick run down of gambling policy in Britain complete with each party views the industry and the legislative issues around it. That article was actually considerably more complex than it sounds given most gambling companies remained sceptical. William Hill even went as far to take the government to court over their plans for a point of consumption tax.

Slightly further afield, there have been even more suggestions put forward as to how to regulate online gambling throughout the whole of Europe. As is often the case, so far nothing has been decided.

Gambling Award Winners

A month rarely goes by without some sort of award being handed out to one or many online casino operators. However, 2012 got off to a bit of an unusual start on this front as bet365 chief Denise Coates was named in the Queen's New Year's Honours List.

That wasn't the only recognition going the way of the Stoke-based online casino operator either. In April bet365 were named in Investec's Hot 100 list where they received a special mention for one of the fastest growing companies in the UK.

But it wasn't just bet365 tasting success this year. 32Red was named the Best Online Casino yet again by Casinomeister – meaning that it's now won the award eleven times.

Betfair and Ladbrokes will also have been pleased with their year's work for the most part. Back in January Experian Hitwise listed the most popular casino websites with 888, William Hill, Betfair and Ladbrokes all included in the list.

Microgaming and Playtech also continued their dominance of the online casino market with Microgaming picking up a Reader's Choice Award in February while title="Multi-Award win for Playtech">Playtech tasted considerable success at the eGR B2B awards.

The Biggest Jackpots of 2012

Big jackpots often hit the headlines and 2012 saw some of the biggest. While the biggest ever online progressive jackpot win, won last year, wasn't topped in 2012, we did witness the largest ever UK jackpot win which came on the Playtech Beach Life slot.

Also, the folks over at PartyCasino have been getting pretty excited about their The Big One jackpot. It's at its biggest ever and has been for some time so hopefully the big win will come soon in 2013.

Elsewhere, Playtech were breaking new ground with the launch of their second multiplayer progressive jackpot game while even Ant and Dec were getting in on the act by handing out a massive prize on the Red or Black television show.

Mobile casinos have even started to get in on the act with William Hill handing out more than £100,000 to a slots winner while loyalty clearly does pay off as a 32Red customer of nine years won big in October.

Casino Online Exclusives

At Casino Online we always like to get the scoop on the latest events were possible so this year we spoke to some of the most knowledgeable people in gambling.

It all started off with our Casinomeister interview with the man himself Bryan Bailey. Brian revealed his thoughts on what he thinks makes 32Red so good, Betfair disappointing and just about everything else in between.

Then, as you do, we went to check out Soccer AM presenter Max Rushden knock down a model of the Houses of Parliament that was made out of cards. But that wasn't before speaking to Bryan Berg, also known as the Cardstacker, about all of the weird and wonderful projects he's worked on.

Finally we spoke to renowned gambling law expert Professor I Nelson Rose who told us all about the chances of online casinos becoming legal in the US. As the focus of online gambling law in the US has been poker, this threw up some really interesting points.
