Australians Spend $18 Billion on Gambling

A report published by the Productivity Commission has found that on average, Australians spend around $18.2 billion on pokie machines and other forms of betting.

While the figures might be slightly skewed, with the Commission noting that it was particularly difficult to remove tourists who visit Australian casinos, it’s believed that around 3% of average household expenditure goes towards gambling. The report also notes that around 10.7% of Australia’s gambling expenditure goes on lotteries, keno and pools, with a further 17% being spent on casino games.

The report went on to suggest that around 15% of Australians gamble regularly and certain news articles have proposed that this 15% makes up the whole of the $18 billion expenditure. However, the figure was generated by all Australians who have placed a bet, not just those who do so regularly. To set the figures in perspective, Allen Consulting Group published a report in 2008 that noted $20 billion was spent on clothes and footwear during the same period and $11 billion on alcoholic beverages.
