Bank Manager Stole to Fund Gambling Addiction
A bank manager in New Zealand has been sentenced to 3 years in prison, after it was revealed they stole $400,000 and wagered it on “pokies” (slot machines).
Heather Scott was found guilty of 65 charges relating to theft, forgery and dishonesty, after it was revealed Scott had been stealing money from Westpac, her employers, for 20 years. Whilst Scott’s theft had gone undetected for 14 years, in the past 6 years it was revealed Scott was siphoning more and more funds in order to keep up her pokies habit.
A Westpac spokesperson has suggested that Scott’s thefts had been a “betrayal of trust” and noted that, unfortunately, “such things happen from time to time”. Last month we brought you the news that Katherine Hawcroft, in Australia, was facing charges for stealing over $500,000 from her children in order to fund a pokie habit.
