Betfair Advert Removed from Television Screens
Betfair
One of Betfair's latest adverts has been hauled off television screens following adjudication by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
The decision came following 29 complaints from viewers about the advert, six of which claimed that the ad misled customers as it did not clarify whether Betfair took any form of commission on winning bets. However, the majority of the complaints consisted of accusations that the suggestions made by the advert about Betfair being operating without a middle man were untrue.
The advert in question features two men in a pub having a conversation about a horse race before they are interrupted by a milk drinking man who acts as a middleman by passing comments between them. The advert then comes to a close just after the middleman is punched by an animated mouse cursor and the two men shake hands.
During this, a voiceover says: “On Betfair, we cut out the middleman, which means you could win bigger…”
The ASA ruled that this statement was confusing and misleading as Betfair actually take a 5% commission on net winnings. They also found that the omission of certain information also caused the advert to mislead viewers further. Their final action was to rule that the advert should not be broadcast again in its current form.
