Betfair and William Hill Target Indian Gambling Market
The Independent has reported that Betfair and William Hill have applied for online gaming licenses in the Himalayan state of Sikkim, in an effort to crack the future Indian gambling market.
It’s believed that 13 gambling operators have applied for licenses in the state and, over the next few weeks, the region’s regulatory body will grant and deny these applications. While the license only covers Sikkim, The Independent has suggested that other states in India will begin allowing online gambling, once they’ve reviewed the revenues it’s driven for the Sikkim government.
A William Hill spokesperson told The Independent that the betting company is applying for a license in the state and that they are in “discussions with potential partners at the moment”. The law in India currently states that overseas operators, such as William Hill and Betfair have to partner with a local operator in the country. It’s believed to William Hill are in partnership talks with Global Torrent International, a company based in Sikkim.
