BetonSports Receive Illegal Gambling Fine

Online gambling company BetonSports has received a $28 million fine, after company founder Gary Kaplan was sentenced to 51 months in prison. The company, which offered US players the chance to wager on sports games “violated the Wire Wager Act”, which states that companies based off-shore cannot accept sports bets via “a wire communication facility”.

While the courts have issued the fine, it’s unlikely it will be paid off. Those involved in the company, such as Kaplan and his siblings have already had to turn over millions of dollars to the federal courts. While lawyers have suggested BetonSports owes $7 - $8 million to US players, U.S Attorney Steve Holtshouser told reporters that the figure is realistically a lot higher. Speaking to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Holtshouser suggested that only half of the players registered at BetonSports came forward about money owed to them. It’s believed that the rest of BetonSports’ players were concerned about the repercussions coming forward could have.
