Bookies Asked to Volunteer Grassroots Sports Fund

Sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe and Sport England chairman Richard Lewis have asked the betting industry to contribute to a grassroots sports reinvestment fund. The Guardian has revealed that Sutcliffe and Lewis have sent a letter to various representatives in the betting industry and governing bodies suggesting that a sizeable contribution to the fund would offer “an opportunity for all parties to show goodwill”.

The Guardian has reported that Sutcliffe and Lewis are looking for a donation total of up to £10 million. The letter also suggested that any donations bookmakers make will not be linked to any “wider issues” in the gambling industry, which will no doubt come as a blow to bookies who have been campaigning against proposed legislation which would see them paying sports bodies a percentage of their revenues. The Remote Gambling Association allegedly responded to the letter suggesting the scheme would have “no prospect of success” if they have to reach a decision by December.
