Cardiff City FC were forced to change their shirts during a recent match, after the Gambling Commission ruled that the betting firm sponsoring them wasn’t allowed to under EU gambling laws.

Cardiff City were playing Reading when they received a call from the Gambling Commission, suggesting that their shirt sponsors, 777ball, don’t have clearance to advertise in the UK. At the moment, the only betting companies and casinos allowed to advertise to UK residents are those that are based within a whitelisted territory, such as Gibraltar, Malta and, of course, the UK.

Just a few days before the issue, Cardiff City chairman Peter Risdale proudly announced the new sponsorship detail on the club’s website. Mr. Risdale has suggested that the club has done everything the Football League asked and was not “embarrassed” by the situation.

777ball executives have since flown over from the Philippines, where the gambling company is based, in a bid to come to an agreement. A Gambling Commission spokesperson told WalesOnline.com that the only way they will sanction the shirt sponsorship is if 777ball moves its operations to a whitelisted jurisdiction.
