A woman known as the “godmother” of a gang in Chongqing, China is facing 18 years in prison for various charges relating to running “underground casinos” and bribery. Associated Press has reported that the trial of Xie Caiping has been closely followed by tabloid press and has led to the court taking on a circus style atmosphere, after visitors came to hear of Caiping’s exploits.
However, behind the media reports is a woman who hired “thugs” to beat up business owners in Chongqing if they didn’t agree with her plans to turn their business into a casino. Those who have been threatened, abused or beaten by Caiping and her gang told reporters that for all the crimes she has committed, 18 years in prison just isn’t long enough.
