Critics hit out Against 24 Hour Glasgow Casinos

Alea Casino
Critics have attacked the Alea Casino management in Glasgow, after it was revealed the Harrah's owned gambling venue had decided to offer 24 hour casino gambling. Alea Casino, which has received permission from Glasgow City Council to open 24 hours a day, and is acting in compliance with the Gambling Act 2005, has received criticism from religious leaders in the city. Reverend Ian Galloway has suggested that the Church of Scotland’s Church and Society Council is “concerned” by the council’s decision to grant Alea Casino a 24 hour license, suggesting that the casino does little to help the economy, aside from providing “low paying jobs”.
The Tory MSP Bill Aitken has also expressed reservations at the council’s ruling, questioning whether it’s necessary for so many casinos in Glasgow to operate for the full 24 hours. Alea isn’t the first casino to be granted a 24/7 license in Glasgow, as Gala Casino already operates around the clock. A spokesperson for the Glasgow City Council told the Scottish Evening Times newspaper that other casinos which remain open 24 hours a day “appear to (be) operating in a satisfactory manner” and Alea Casino is in full accordance with current gambling legislation.
