A bill that will strictly regulate online gambling in Cyprus as of December 15, 2010 has been passed to the European Commission for approval.
The bill has been put up for approval following the Cypriot government’s strong desire to ban all forms of online gambling in the country. Attorney general Petros Clerides has spoken publicly about the bill and has admitted that they need persuade the European Commission that a ban will be in the public interest.
He added: “We will also argue that the ban combats criminality and protects the consumer.”
The Cypriot police are also strongly behind the bill as they have asked for the legislation to be voted on by the current parliament before the 2011 elections. Doing so will allow them to begin dealing with illegal online gambling.
However, progress has been slightly faulted and speaking last Thursday, Clerides refused to comment on the bill and how its case for approval was developing with the European Commission. What he did mention was legislation that had been approved for other European countries should serve as an example of the strength of this ban.
Despite this confidence, there have been rejected proposals from Denmark, Poland and Romania as they attempted to impose similar sanctions to that which Clerides is attempting.
