Debt Advisor Robbed Bookmakers
A debt advisor from Glasgow has been sent to prison for years, after he admitted to attempting to rob two bookmakers. John Thomson, whilst armed with a knife, attempted to steal from nearby Coral and Ladbrokes betting shops. On both occasions, the attempted robberies failed and Thomson was arrested by police then released on bail.
Thomson then returned to one of the bookmakers in order to wager on a slot machine. However, such actions breached his conditions of bail, leading to him being arrested once more. When asked why he attempted the robberies, Thomson initially told the police it was “none of their business”, but in court suggested that he was gripped by a gambling addiction.
Judge Dunlop described Thomson’s attempts at robbery as “inept”, but suggested that due to the serious nature of the attempted crimes, as well as his lack of regard for the victims involved, he had no choice but to sentence him to prison.
