European Union (EU) ministers have admitted that there may be a need for continent wide cooperation when dealing with online gambling.

Conclusions were drawn following discussions by the member states of the EU concerning the framework for gambling and betting. This has been reported as the first time that all member states have agreed on an issue concerning online gambling since the topic was introduced to the council in 2008.

Secretary General of the EGBA Sigrid Ligne spoke about the importance of the agreements that had been reached and added that he felt the conclusions were a “remarkable result.”

The different conclusions reached will pave the way for national authorities across Europe to be able to seek consistent guidance from the European Union as well as conferring with other countries about legislation. Recently the European Union’s stance on online gambling has varied slightly with some legislation that has been sent for approval being rejected.

Ligne also commented that he hoped that further developments would occur as European states move toward a more consistent set of laws concerning online gambling.
