Five to Offer Live Gambling

In a landmark move, Five has revealed that it’ll soon be offering live gambling up to 3 nights a week, from midnight until 4 am.

The TV channel has taken advantage of the Advertising Standard Authority’s recent ruling that TV gambling is a form of teleshopping, and as such has relaxed guidelines for broadcasters. Five has brokered a deal with NetPlay, which will now provide the channel with a four hour “advertisement” for gambling.

Players will be able to wager on real-life roulette wheels and other games, via their televisions. If they’re lucky enough to win, their name will be shown live on screen. Whilst both Five and NetPlay are, of course, happy with the agreement, John Beyer, of MediawatchUK has noted:

“This is a money-making enterprise from a commercial TV company struggling from a lack of revenue. I am anxious about people engaging in gambling in this way. People who can't go to a casino will be able to gamble on TV. People who cannot afford it will be attracted to it.”

The casino will begin its first 4 hour slot on September the 17th.
