France Bans Betfair

In a last minute amendment to new gambling legislation, the French government has ruled that betting exchanges such as Betfair will not be able to operate in the country.
The government has introduced new laws allowing EU based gambling companies to operate in the country provided they contribute a portion of their revenues to sport and pay a license fee. However, they have also ruled that exchanges which offer lay bets will not be allowed to take their business to France.
The French parliament bolstered their legislation with a British Gambling Commission report from 2007, which found that 9.8% of bettors who used companies such as Betfair developed a gambling addiction, compared with 1-3% of the general gambling community, who use online casinos and other forms of entertainment. Betfair has suggested that the new rule “is a slap in the face for the consumer.”
