Gambling in Britain Reaches New Heights
Gambling is on the rise in Britain according to the British Gambling Prevalence Survey 2010 which found that almost three quarters of adults gambled last year.
The figure of 73% is up from the 68% that was recorded in the 2007 survey and is thought to be fairly representative of gambling activity in Britain. The survey also found that in terms of how British adults like to gamble, their habits are quite varied with many different forms of gambling being favoured. The survey found that in relation to the number of total gamblers, those who wagered online and in online casinos was fairly low.
This is the third survey of its kind with its two predecessors taking place in 2003 and 2007. However, this is the first time that the survey had been conducted since the Gambling Act 2005 came into effect in 2007.
The Gambling Commission’s Chairman Brian Pomeroy said: “The survey confirms that there are a significant and growing number of people who take part in gambling.”
He also emphasised the importance of helping individuals who may be seen as being problem gamblers as the percentage of problem gamblers recorded increased from 0.5% to 0.7%.
