Hollywood Stars Oppose Gettysburg Casino
Matthew Broderick
Opposition to the building of a casino near the site of the Battle of Gettysburg has been reinforced by support from Hollywood. Actors Sam Waterston and Matthew Broderick, filmmaker Ken Burns and author David McCullough feature in a video, along with local residents, which states that the building of a casino would be disrespectful to the soldiers who died to save the nation. The site, which was the setting for the major battle during the Civil War is a popular historical tourist destination, but plans to create a hotel-casino have been put forward by developer David LeVan.
LeVan planned to capitalise on the tourism already generated by the site, by building the Mason Dixon Resort and Casino. His argument was that it would lift the economy and quality of life for residents and guests. However, this plan hasn’t proved popular, as “No Casino” signs have sprung up in the local area, along with the new high quality video that’s been created. This new video is the latest in a long line of protests, as both pro casino and no casino supporters continue to voice their views, with the debate looking set to continue for the foreseeable future.
