Jamaica’s First Ever Casino to be Built
Kingston, Jamaica
Jamaica’s Tourism Minister, Edmund Bartlett, revealed that his government were looking into the possibility of building Jamaica’s first ever casino.
This news comes after the introduction of casino gambling in certain resort areas has proved to be very popular. Speaking at a media breakfast, Bartlett even added that the building of the casino could begin before the end of 2011.
Interest in casino licenses in Jamaica is reported to be high with Bartlett admitting that now that the door has been opened for the creation of casinos, at least three licenses could be granted in the next three years. However, Bartlett was cautious not to get carried away and emphasised that the casinos would be regulated strictly to ensure that the resorts do not become solely about gambling.
The Jamaican government has previously suggested that casino gambling could be a major way of increasing the country’s earnings with new resorts creating a number of jobs.
Bartlett said: “Jamaica will soon become a destination that offers casino gambling experiences, rather than being a casino destination.”
He added that applications for licenses to operate casinos are now being accepted, thanks to recent legislation which has been passed.
