Jersey Not Affected by Whitelisting Freezing
Jersey
The UK Government recently announced that it would not be accepting any more applications for whitelistings for the time being, as they will be undertaking a review of the current UK gambling legislation.
The freeze means that, for now, there will be no new whitelisted jurisdictions. To clarify, a whitelisted jurisdiction means that the country has been approved by the Government as a jurisdiction which complies with the UK’s gambling legislation. Current whitelisted jurisdictions include Jersey, Malta, Gibraltar and the UK. Casinos based in these places are able to advertise to UK residents and have been essentially approved by the UK Government as a safe place to gamble.
Today, Jersey announced that even though the Government is reviewing the current legislation, they’ll still be accepting applications from casinos which wish to be licensed there.
The jurisdiction has informed eGaming Review that the legislation review won’t affect their current whitelisted status and that they will still be issuing full casino licenses to operators. Speaking about the legislation, Jason Lane, head of regulation for the Channel Island jurisdiction, noted; “Nothing is definite and the legislation still has to go through Parliament, but the Minister for economic development is confident it is robust (and will be passed).”
