Las Vegas Casino Databases being Targeted by Hackers
Las Vegas Strip
Several recent cases have emerged where computer hackers have targeted casino customer databases looking for player’s information or to steal their loyalty points.
In order to prevent more cases from taking place, the Nevada Gaming Control Board has intervened by sending out letters and information to casinos. These letters have included information about the casino’s responsibility to uphold the state’s customer confidentiality laws. In addition to this, they have provided tips on how to keep customer information safe and secure as well as what not to do.
Chief of the Nevada Gaming Control Board’s Enforcement Division is Jerry Markling. He told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that: “With respect to these databases, the board has recently investigated numerous incidents where they have been compromised.”
He added that they were particularly worried about the potential for hackers to access personal information and therefore leave casino players open to identity theft. Also of concern of the gaming board is the use of new technology, such as casino smartphone applications. They believe that these applications are easier to hack and are making it simpler for hackers to get hold of personal information and steal any loyalty or club points.
