Casinos on the Las Vegas Strip have pledged to turn off all none-essential lighting for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Earth Hour event, taking place on March the 27th. WWF’s Earth Hour event encourages companies across the globe to do their bit for the ecosystem by turning off as many lights and electrical appliances as possible.

For the second year running, representatives from both Wynn and Harrah’s casinos have pledged that they’ll turn off all non-essential lighting and Mayor Oscar Goodman has suggested that even the iconic “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign will have its power cut for the event. Harrah’s regional president, Rick Mazer, has suggested that the event is “awe inspiring” noting that the casino’s “signs are so much a part of what we are all about, the idea of turning them off for an hour might cause some people to go home and think twice”.

Leslie Aun, the managing director for the U.S Earth Hour has also suggested that when people realise that even Las Vegas can go green, they’ll feel empowered to turn off their electricity. Earth Hour began in Sydney, Australia, in 2008 and since then has gone global, encouraging individuals and businesses to go “green” – if only for an hour or two. The event will take place in Las Vegas between 8.30pm – 9.30pm and in the UK, from 8.30pm – 9.30pm (GMT).
