Macau Casinos Realise Near-Record February Earnings

While Las Vegas has financially crashed and burned over the past year and a half, Macau, a relatively small region in China, has quickly grown from strength to strength. The Hindu has reported that casinos in the province of China took in an impressive $1.68 billion in February, cementing Macau’s position as a leading area in the gambling industry. Macau’s gaming revenues for February 2010 climbed by 69.4% when compared with February last year and, according to analysts, casinos in Macau made $87.55 million per day during the second half of the month.
It’s believed that much of the revenue has been generated by high stakes card games such as baccarat and blackjack. Patrons at the casinos tend to favour table and card based casino games, as opposed to slots, which have traditionally proven popular in other gambling focused areas, such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Analysts have suggested that the “recent flood of money” in the region is down to an influx of visitors from mainland China and also noted that in the past year, gambling revenue in Macau has risen by 56%, to $9.32 billion, when compared with financial reports from 2008.
