Fruit Machine
A former employee at the Retired Soldier pub in Malvern is currently in court after admitting to burglary and three counts of theft. Kristian Roberts is believed to have stole between £1,000-£2,000 from his employers, then used the funds to gamble in the pub’s own fruit machine. Roberts’ employers became suspicious when they noticed £50 notes from the till were disappearing. It wasn’t until September 2009 that Roberts was caught in the act, after he was filmed on CCTV taking money from the pub till.
After being confronted by his employer, Roberts suggested he’d pay back the money owed in monthly instalments. However, after defaulting on these payments, the owner of the pub called in the police. Defending Roberts, Sam Lamsdale suggested the former pub employee developed a severe gambling addiction and noted that Roberts has since called Gamblers Anonymous. Roberts’ next hearing will be on the 17th of Feburary.
