MPs to join UK Gambling Panel

Back in February we reported how Dr Ian Gibson, MP for Norwich North questioned the Secretary for Culture Media and Sport, Andy Burnham, on FA match-fixing. Gibson alleged that in a match between Derby and Norwich, Derby's victory came alongside massive fluctuations in Asian betting markets.

The allegation implied was of course that the match was fixed, but following recent complaints, Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe has asked Dr Gibson to join an expert panel which will aid the Gambling Commission, which regulates gambling in the UK.

Dr Gibson, who is an ardent Norwich City fan, suggested that he'd be keen to join the board, which will have a membership of 8-10 people, including representatives from the betting industry, sports and the police. The news came alongside William Hill's admission that they had flagged up four suspicious football matches since the 1st of May 2008.
