Mum Stole From Children to Fund Gambling Habit
A mother from Canberra, Australia, has allegedly stole over $500,000 from her children’s inheritance in order to fund a gambling habit.
Katherine Hawcroft is accused to 229 counts of theft from three of her children and two nieces. It’s been alleged that Hawcroft had been put in charge of investing in her children’s future and entrusting a property, previously owned by her late parents, in their names. Instead, Hawcroft is believed to have pocketed the cash and spent $523,000 playing “pokies”, which is Australian slang for slots.
Hawcroft is in Supreme Court today facing allegations and has so far pleaded not guilty to all 229 charges.
