Nevada May Move Into Online Gambling

The Las Vegas Review Journal has reported that if legislation legalising online gambling passes in the United States, the Nevada Government may take on a “leadership role”.

A current hot topic in the US, online gaming is a particularly prickly subject. While various lobbying groups, including Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association (iMEGA) have attempted to push through new legislation, all eyes are currently watching Barney Frank, a democrat keen to push through a new bill which would legalise online gaming.

The LV Review Journal has suggested that if Frank’s bill was approved, then Nevada would be one of the first states deemed a license, noting that companies would be keen to set up in the State, which is steeped in a rich gambling history.

Greg Gemignani, an attorney for law firm Lionel Sawyer & Collins, has bigger ideas for the state, suggesting that Nevada could also become a regulator. Speaking to the Journal, Gemignani noted: “Given Nevada's current laws permitting interactive gaming licensing, Nevada is well-placed to be at the forefront of regulating online gaming and providing assistance to the federal government in determining the suitability of applicants.”

However, whilst Gemignani and others within the gaming industry are speculating about Nevada’s future in online gambling, it may be some time before a bill legalising online casinos and internet betting is put into force. Speaking about the future of gaming in the States, Gemignani says that a “debate (on online gaming) won’t happen this year” and that the issue has yet to reach “critical mass”.
