New Auction Website Defined as “Gambling”
The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that a new auction site, which has launched a “buying portal” in Australia allows potential buyers to gamble on items and has warned that the site involves an element of gambling. DubLi, which also operates in the United States, features a competitive element, where users place the lowest bid possible in an effort to win an item. To find out the cost of an item listed, customers must first part with credits worth 80-cents each.
Anne Hollonds, the vice-president of Relationships Australia, has suggested that customers should be careful when bidding on items, noting that “people can get a high from the competition side of it”. DubLi chairman Kent Lee Holmstoel told the newspaper that the site cannot be construed as gambling based, “as you can decide the outcome yourself by buying the products before anybody else”.
