New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has announced plans for a radical overhaul of the gambling industry in the state and, specifically, in Atlantic City. Currently, local officials are in charge of gambling and tourist interests in Atlantic City, but Gov. Christie has attacked the apparent mismanagement at the heart of Atlantic City’s legislators, suggesting that the government was “ineffective, inefficient” and has “squandered hundreds of millions of dollars it has gotten over the years”.

Governor Christie has proposed that the state government would take over tourism duties from the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority. Christie has also put forward proposals to forge new working relationships with the existing casinos in Atlantic City. Plans for New Jersey changes as a whole include privatising the state-owned Meadowlands racetrack and radically restructuring the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement and Casino Control Commission.

However, Christie’s decision to potentially sell the Meadowlands racetrack has attracted criticism from those within the horse racing industry. At the moment, the state government currently pays $20 million a year to fund the racetrack, but Christie has now made clear that New Jersey no longer has “the money to subsidize failure”.

It’s believed Governor Christie is hoping to implement the new plans by July 2011.
