New MGM-Mirage Building Signals Hope in Las Vegas
Las Vegas Strip
An $8.5 billion building soon to be completed in Las Vegas has given the Nevada community something to hope for, after MGM-Mirage, the company behind the new casino resort, interviewed thousands of candidates for 12,000 vacancies.
The CityCenter is set to be one of the largest resorts in Vegas, offering a shopping centre, as well as 4,000 hotel rooms and a casino. Designed by several world-renown architects, the building certainly hasn’t come cheap for MGM-Mirage, who are believed to be $1.8 billion in debt because of the project.
However, this hasn’t stopped thousands of potential employees flocking to recent interviews. The CityCenter initially had 12,000 job vacancies, 4,000 of which were offered to current MGM employees. With a 95% take up, on Monday MGM were looking to fill up the 8,000 remaining vacancies. The company received 160,000 applications for the jobs and, after whittling down the list, 500 were interviewed on Monday.
Whilst there are still several jobs to fill, the CityCenter won’t be open until December 2009, giving interviewers ample time to fill the remaining spaces. Even though the CityCenter has instilled a new feeling of optimism, MGM-Mirage official Alan Feldman has suggested that rather than signalling a new era in Vegas, the CityCenter might be the last fling of city built on boom, which is now feeling the bust.
