New Software Blocks Gambling Sites

The Nova Scotia Gaming Corp have developed BetStopper, a new gadget which stops children from accessing online casinos and other gambling related sites. The software can be installed on home computers and many are heralding it, including Nova Scotia's Chronicle Herald, as the first of its kind. BetStopper was created in response to growing concerns that children were able to gamble online, both playing for fun and with real money, and easily access an astonishing amount of online casinos. By installing the software, parents can choose to block access to online casinos such as Cherry Red Casino, or Casino Tropez, with just a few clicks.

Marie Mullally, who is head of the Nova Scotia Gaming Corp suggested that the sheer amount of underage gamblers online was revealed by a survey commissioned by the Corp in 2006, which suggested that children were gambling online 3 times as often as adults. The survey also revealed that males aged 14-17 were most likely to gamble online, often wagering on sports.

Mullally suggested that due to the shocking results of the study, the Gaming Corp soon commissioned a company to create the software, and quickly began test-driving it with 250 families in Nova Scotia. Mullally has noted that BetStopper has an "enhanced level of intelligence" and has a "98% rate" of successfully blocking gambling related websites. Mullally disclosed that parents who wish to receive a copy of BetStopper should visit http://www.nsgc.ca/.
