New York Casino Rejected by US Government
Plans for a Native American Casino in the Catskill Mountains have been put back by the US Bureau of Indian Affairs.
A proposal for the creation of a casino within driving distance of New York City has been rejected by the US Government after originally agreeing to the plans.
The intended casino would have sat in the Catskill Mountains in an area that was once popular with many A-list celebrities known as the Borscht Belt. This area has now fallen on hard times and the plans put forward by the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians from Wisconsin would have helped to regenerate the area.
The proposal was originally put forward at the end of former New York Governor David Paterson’s administration was agreed to because of the jobs and revenue that it would bring to the area. However, government officials have now pulled a u-turn and killed any current chances of the casino being created.
President of the Stockbridge Munsee Band said: “We believe the department’s rationale is weak, we are committed to resolving any issues.”
Not everyone is dismayed by the news though as Oneida Nation Representative Ray Halbritter explained how he felt that the process was always going to fail as a result of the Band not actually having any real claims to the land which they planned to build on.
