Online Gambling is Coming to Netherlands
European Union
Following rulings against other European countries online gambling systems made by the European Court of Justice (ECJ), the Dutch government has announced its intentions to license all forms of e-gaming.
Although the ECJ has not made any ruling concerning the Dutch system, it has demonstrated that similar systems in European countries have to be changed in order to ensure that betting licenses are allocated in a transparent and equal manner. The effect of this is that companies from outside of Holland will be able to reach Dutch customers, making for a more competitive market.
Dutch newspaper De Telegraf has reported that the licensing of online gambling could make revenues of €100 million, possible increasing up to €270 million per year. This change in stance regarding the regulation of online gambling comes after comments made by the Dutch Minister of Justice who argued that poker should be legalised in Holland.
The plans that have been put in place to regulate online gambling will mimic those which are currently used in France and Italy and will regulate and tax all forms of gambling that takes place online. Currently, the only form of online gambling that is legal is sports betting, which is monopolised by De Lotto and state lottery.
