Online Gambling Legislation in the UK may Change
Gerry Sutcliffe, the Sports Minister at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has suggested current gambling laws may have to change in order to incorporate offshore gaming companies targeting UK players. At the moment, legislation states that in order to legally advertise in the UK, casinos must be based in the UK, or one of the specially selected whitelisted jurisdictions such as Antigua or Gibraltar.
However, Sutcliffe has suggested that if offshore gambling companies wish to promote their services in the UK, they’ll also have to gain a license from the Gambling Commission. The proposed legislation will undergo a consultation period, before coming into effect. The move echoes current legislation in Nevada, which states that companies must apply and receive a gaming license before they’re allowed to set up a casino. Speaking to The Times, Sutcliffe suggested that the proposed changes in the law would mean consumers are better protected.
