New Jersey is still very much on course to become the first state to regulate online gambling, after the State Assembly and Senate voted in favour of bill A-2570 last night.

The Assembly vote took place at 6.44PM EST and received 63 votes in favour with eleven against and three abstentions. The Senate vote then mirrored this success with 34 votes in favour and just two votes against.

Now that the bill has received approval from New Jersey’s Assembly and Senate, the next and final step is for it to be signed in by Governor Chris Christie. Once this is done, the bill will automatically become law. However, Christie has not made his stance on the online gambling bill, drawn up by Senator Raymond Lesnkiak, known.

Lobby group iMEGA’s chairman Joe Brennan Jr played a part in the drafting of the bill and said: “It’s clear that New Jersey’s representatives want their state to be at the forefront of the online gaming industry.”

He added: “[It will] create high-paying, skilled jobs in the technology sector and also attract investment to the state.”
