PlayNow.com Online Casino Suffers Serious Security Breach
British Columbia
Just a few hours after launching, the new British Columbia online casino, PlayNow.com has disappeared, following an alleged traffic overload, as well as a costly glitch. According to press reports, players who managed to log into the new Canadian casino before the website was shut down on Thursday, faced having their private details shared with other players – as well as other gamblers being able to access their account.
Last week, a spokesperson for the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC), originally suggested that PlayNow.com was pulled due to the sheer amount of traffic it was receiving. However, in a new statement issued by the BCLC, concerns were raised about the safety and security measures in place at the casino. BCLC has suggested that the PlayNow.com website experienced a “data crossover”, meaning that players account details – and even funds – were appearing in wrong accounts. This allowed some players to wager with money which wasn’t theirs.
The security issue affected 134 players at the casino and the BCLC has suggested that any funds caught up in the data crossover have been redistributed back to the right accounts. Twelve players also had some personal details compromised, after they appeared in other player accounts and the BCLC has suggested that those affected by this issue have been contacted. Mike Graydon, the president of BCLC, has suggested that PlayNow.com won’t appear online again until the issue is fixed, although he believes the online casino could be “up and running again later on this week”.
