Postman Stole Cash to Fund for Gambling Habit
A postman in Macclesfield has admitted to 3 counts of theft, after it was revealed he was stealing customer’s cash in order to fund his gambling habit.
Ian McKeith pleaded guilty to stealing £3,900 during his stint as an office work at Royal Mail between 2007 and 2009. It was revealed that McKeith, instead of following correct procedures, was pocketing money from postage surcharges paid by customers.
Andrew Meachin, who was defending McKeith, suggested that the postal worker became depressed after a recent job promotion and turned to gambling on slots. Meachin revealed that McKeith was happy to be caught, as he knew his gambling had “spiralled out of control”. McKeith was sentenced to a 8 week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months and will also have to pay £4330 in compensation and court fees.
