Early reports from Las Vegas have indicated that late bets placed on the Pittsburgh Steelers to win saved many Las Vegas bookmakers from enduring what would have been heavy losses on last night’s Super Bowl XLV.

The game saw the Green Bay Packers eventually run out 31-25 winners over the Pittsburgh Steelers in front of more than 103,000 people at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas. The Packers had been most bookies favourites with many fans also expecting the game to be a low scoring affair.

Cantor Gaming runs the sportsbooks at a number of Las Vegas casinos including The Venetian, Hard Rock, The M and Tropicana and reported that they may have been slightly up on the event. However, while most bookmakers were hoping for an upset in the form of Pittsburgh winning, Cantor’s sportsbook director revealed that a number of late Steelers to win bets meant that a Packers victory was good for their casinos.

Mike Colbert, Cantor’s sports book director said: “I expected Steeler money to come in today and it did, it was just a lot more than I expected.”

Elsewhere, Lucky’s sportsbooks admitted that they lost out slightly on betting for the event with the two-point conversion by Antwaan Randle El proving to be a sore point for many bookies.
