UK Online Gambling Gaining Popularity Faster than Facebook
Research conducted by Nielson into the UK gambling industry has found that between July 2009 and July 2010, online casinos and gambling sites saw a bigger increase in visitors than social networking sites such as Facebook. According the results published by the market research company, a grand total of 3.2 million people visited online gambling sites over the twelve month period, compared to the 2.2 million extra visitors who logged on to social networking sites. For the online gambling industry, this shows an increase of 40% on the previous year’s results. Although the industry was expected to continue to grow, not many would have predicted an increase in popularity such as this.
In addition to the vast number of online casinos that have been increasing their client base, lottery company Camelot has gone from strength to strength by increasing their number of unique visitors from 5 million up to 9.9 million in July 2010. Figures such as these continue to serve as encouragement for the online gaming community.
As part of the study undertaken by Nielsen, they also researched who was taking part in online gambling and found that while women made up 46% of the online gamblers, it was the increase in middle-aged men that has caused such large increase in overall popularity.
