William Hill Hoping to Acquire the Tote
William Hill Casino
Popular UK bookmaker and online casino owner, William Hill have announced the intent to buy the Tote, the government owned betting firm, even though current competition rules don’t allow the deal taking place. The bookmaker and owner of the popular online Playtech online casino, who announced that their largest ever jackpot of £420,948.21 was won on Sunday, are signalling their intent to strengthen their standing in the UK gambling market. However the bid to buy the government run firm is not expected to be a simple process as William Hill’s main competitors in the UK gambling market, Paddy Power and Ladbrokes, have also made public their plans to take charge the betting firm.
The government officials currently in charge of the Tote admitted that its sale is imminent as Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport Jeremy Hunt confirmed that the government had “no desire” to maintain control of the betting firm and wished to release it from the public sector. However, the expansion of William Hill’s betting ventures aren’t just confined to the UK. Following the opening of the German and Austrian gaming markets to international organisations, William Hill have also launched an Austrian betting website today, in an attempt to gain a substantial share of their sports betting market which is reported to be worth €110 million per year.
